Vagina Monologues – Gunn Students Use Theatre to Take on Challenging Topics
High school is a place where young people begin the very difficult transition to adulthood. It can be a shock — students are confronted with a host of issues that can make them, their families, and even their community, very uncomfortable. One goal of the theatre program at Gunn is to give students a way to use their creativity to tackle some of the most important issues facing society.
From Valentine’s Day through February 16th, the Gunn Theatre department, the Gunn Theatre Boosters, and the national non-profit group V-Day will present a production of Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler’s groundbreaking 1996 play. Because of its adult subject matter, this play is not often produced in high school, but Gunn students chose to take on this challenging subject matter on their own — the production was conceived, produced, and directed entirely by Gunn students.
This play, based on a series of interviews conducted by Ensler, showcases many aspects of female sexuality and unabashedly tackles topics such as love, rape, sex, (and the word “vagina”) head on. Proceeds from this production, produced by Gunn senior Wendy Kraemer and directed by Gunn senior Holly Wright, go to benefit Bay Area Women Against Rape — an organization whose mission is to combat sexual violence by providing 24-hour counseling services and community education regarding sexual assault issues.
This play addresses many important, but sometimes difficult, issues which may not be suitable for young children. Parents please use your discretion when bringing youngsters. We are rating this play PG-13.
Performances are February 14th, 15th and 16th at 7:30 in Gunn’s Studio Theater and last 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $5 at the door. After each performance, there will be an audience discussion with the cast and a representative of Bay Area Women Against Rape.
